I’m 17 years old and I am determined to get a job in the computer industry. I will be going to school in the fall to get my A+ certification and I’m really excited about it. I know there are many other certs that are probably better, but for me it’s a huge start. I’m really interested in fixing computers, hardware and software issues. My goal is to become a repair tech for a small local company to just learn and get some experience under my belt. My real interest is security and penetration testing, but that may be something for the future. Right now I just want something that will pay the bills. I was wondering what other training I would need to become a repair technician. I can’t really afford to go to a 4 year college, but I know a degree in computer science would benefit me greatly. Any advice for this would be greatly appreciated.

On the job training is best. If you don’t want Uncle Sam to train you, find a job at entry level at a local store – even Best Buy if you don’t mind working for a group known to have about the least computer knowledge of any group in the animal kingdom. After a year, if you haven’t gotten enough of a raise, you have a year’s experience – that’s worth more than a few certificates and no experience. (If you choose military training, when you get out you’ll have about as much training as anyone will need.)
