What is the most practical and secure way to connect to my home desktop/network through an internet connection?

I want to do this from a college computer or my own laptop so I can access my data at home while on campus…..
i have a windows xp pro desktop……i’d like to access it using windows vista business laptop and eeepc (on linux)…..especially the eeepc

ftp is nice but there are times when remotely running the applications would be nicer

it will not allow me to change the identification of the computer because networking is not properly installed or configured.im pretty sure its saying that because its not connected to its original network. im logged in as administrator and it still will not let me change it. i am trying to add it to my HOME workgroup but the netsetup will not run because it is stuck on the domain.

My camera has a BNC output connection and I want to install them to my laptop/computer. The problem is finding the right adapters to hook them up. What can I do to make it work. My comp. has both VGA and USB ports. Just need to know if I need any fancy powered adapter or just an adapter that would go on series in the wires.

I have an all in one printer set up as a fax machine only right now.. I would like to be able to have it on my computer network but there is no computer available there and moving it is not an answer as that is where phone line is?

I have computers in my house…just not in the room where the all in one is… and the computers are too far away from the fax line.
The all in one only has usb and parallel connectors on back… nothing else?!

So I have a Netgear WGR614 and it works fine with the Westell Wirespeed B90-210015-04 modem (I have Verizon DSL). We have 2 desktops and 4 laptops. They all work fine with the router.

However, if I were to directly connect my modem to the any of the laptops or desktops, it does not connect to the internet and nothing happens if I ping it. I tried this under both Windows (xp and vista) and Linux (ubuntu 9.04) on all computers in my house with the exact same result. So obviously this isn’t an software/hardware issue with any of the computers, and it’s most likely it’s something to do with the MODEM.
So, I tried power cycling the modem NUMEROUS amount of times, tried hard resetting the modem, and left the modem turned off for 1 night before connecting.

So I made some hypotheses about the modem:
1. The modem is somehow “LOCKED” to my router’s MAC address.
2. The modem is faulty.
3. ISP is artificially restricting certain MAC addresses.

As you can see, I’m not a computer newbie but this problem just made me stumped….
LEARN TO READ. I specifically said I used BOTH WINDOWS AND UBUNTU.
Kniggs, I tried connecting my computer DIRECTLY to the DSL modem. Pinging the router doesn’t do anything and nothing happens if try going to 192.168.1.1
I tried 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.1.0 and other “default” IP addresses to access my modem and nothing happens. What do I do?

Okay, so I got a new digital camera, called the TL220 samsung. I’d like to upload photos and transfer it to my computer. But the thing is, when I connect the USB port on both ends, my computer says the device malfunctioned. I tried to click every option in fixing it but it won’t work.

So the main problem is, the device malfunctioned and it can not run on my computer. It also says the driver is uninstalled and my computer cannot find the right driver for it. Please help!

I took my laptop to my cousins house and I tried to connect to a network, but they dont have internet, so i tried to connect to an unsecured computer to computer network but it didnt connect. It had 4 bars and it still didnt connect! it just said not connected! PLZ Help!

I have a USB to Ethernet male to male cable.Would that work to connect the computers together and transfer files? Or would I have to get a USB pc file transfer cable from a store? If I did that would I need software to transfer files? Or does the Win XP computer do all the work with the interface? I just want to transfer some of the important files over to my Win XP before I wipe the Win98 hard drive or just trash the whole thing. As you can tell I’m a total newbie at this.
These are home computers and I don’t have any networking hardware other than the cable below.I don’t want to spend a huge deal of money to set up a network or buy a flash drive.
