I tried to Google it, but I was stumped as to how to find it.

While speaking of intranets, there are some networks that allow the user’s computer to be stored on the server (I’m guessing that’s how it works).

So a user can access any computer and have all their settings be personalized with all their files included.

Is there a name for it? Is that how it works? Does it take more server power to create?

My bad if it’s somewhere in the history, I didn’t see anything.

Thanks.

Sounds kind of like thin clients, see below link for extended definition. Basically all of the computing is done on the server and access is by a web browser or a remote client software.

Thin clients, as the previous answer said. When using Thin Clients the server is basically doing all the work, so you need a bigger/more capable server (a “mainframe”). The actual “computer” you sit in front of doesn’t have it’s own brain, it’s kind of just a window onto the server.

Also, look up “Roaming Profiles” – these are less taxing on the server but still result in user settings applying on different computers. “Roaming profiles” work in situations where a user has their own PC with it’s own hard drive (for example) and the programs run on the local computer; Programs won’t automatically all be the same across different computers unless you set them up that way, but the settings will be. How much of the user’s files are copied depends on whether you use network drives to store them or not.
