I have 3 computers at home, all PCs. What is the best and most cost efficient way to connect them to make a computer network? I would like to share data and information between the computers. What equipment such as server, hub will I need to buy?

i think that this website will help you a lot

you only need one modem/router with enough ports for all your computers, if you only have a modem, with a single port on the back, get a cheap 5 port switch, or 8 port switch, connect your modem to 1 of the ports, and the other computers to it.
if all of them have an active internet connection, you are almost done,
be sure that all computers are in the same network group, control panel, system, properties, in the name tab, change the workgroup to be the same in all computers, restart them.
right click on a folder and share it. you should be able to “see” that folder from another computer by typing \computername in the address bar of windows explorer, (not internet explorer).
if you need any further help, just tell
Oscar, melbourne.
I would go with what Oscar said, except one minor change;
use a router, not a switch
yes a switch is cheaper, but a router is more secure
with a router, your whole system will have 1 IP on the internet, and a switch each computer will have an IP on the internet. With three computers, you shouldn’t have much performance issue with this, and it has some level of security built in.
Also, are the computers in the same room? if not, are you prepaired to have cat 5 wire run through the walls?
a wireless router and cards is the most cost effective in this case.
I disagree that router is more secure…duh…
router just connect to different VLANS…Internet and LAn…
But to 3 PC…Just buy a router..
