I graduated with a computer science degree. I was unable to get a IT job 7 years ago, so I started in real estate. Now real estate is having some well-publicized problems, and I’d like to get back into IT. I consider myself open to any position, yet all jobs I apply to on Monster, Dice, Sologig, etc. never generate a response. I need help.

I don’t know about IT but I do know some Realtors that are doing what I am doing and making a ton of money in less than 6 months. Check out this website http://www.vrtmg.com/rlunsford and click on Business Opportunities you would do well since you are a Realtor.

Part of the problem is probably that the economy is absolutely terrible right now, and that when companies need to down-size, for whatever reason, IT seems to take a major hit. IT people don’t seem to be quite as vocal as the sales team, marketing team, and basically anything else team, so the hatchet often hits them first.

Now is not a good time to be getting into anything really, but your issue is mostly the result of bad timing, and the fact that your degree was issued 7 years ago… do you even remember anything from then? You might want to take a refresher course or go for a certification in something IT related so that potential employers can see that you are serious about getting back into it.

If I’m an employer and I saw that you’ve got 7 years of completely unrelated experience, and there are 10 other people who’ve been doing IT for those same seven years, who do you think I would pick?

You need to do something to brush up on skills, in an official manner, that will prove to the employers that you’ve still got what it takes.
