I have a Windows XP computer and a Windows NT4.0 Server. I got them both at a surplus sale (that is why the server is quite old). If it is possible, how can I make a direct network between the two? I have a CAT5 cable plugged into their TCP/IP ports, but I can’t get them to network.

You need a crossover cable to connect two computers directly (without switch) to each other. And configure both of the computer’s with appropriate network configuration (e.g. IP address, subnet, default gateway et cetera). For color combination required for a crossover cable, you may refer to: http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable5.htm
