Pros: battery life, new atom n550 processor

Cons: 1 gig memory, windows 7 starter, touch pad is totally worthless when typing. This makes you want to throw the whole pc in the garbage as it can’t do what it is supposed to do as it is set up from the factory. Trying to type an email is an exercise in frustration. The cursor jumps around like crazy while typing anything. I’ve just now managed to turn all the sensitities down to the minimum and turn some options off for the touchpad while using an external microsoft mouse. Finally I can type something whithout the cursor going banannas. This is really emabarrasing that a company puts out a pc with this type of hyper sensitivity in the mouse pad. How can anyone type anything on this with the standard factory settings???????

I’m giving the pc 4 stars out of 5 because mainly the mousepad sensitivity is outrageous and not set up correctly for most users. 2nd the battery life I am getting is no where near 13 hours as asus is saying. They claim it is based on 40% screen brightness. I’m using it at the minimum brightness and am getting only about 7 hrs or so. I am playing low resolution videos of 480 lines or so which is not HD in windows media player and the processor is not working that hard. Also this pc can not play 1080p HD videos from my canon camera. It plays them but it is jumpy. Not a huge problem for me but that is part of the limitation with a netbook. Portability is good.

I have had one time at startup when the windows was missing a setup config file for the desktop and because of this windows could not remember my user’s desktop arrangement. This was solved by doing the error checking with the hard disk at bootup. Once this was done this was resolved. Aside from this I think its a pretty solid netbook that works great for viewing low res movies ripped to the hard disk for long flights or entertaining babies, etc. Checking email at starbucks is a nice added perk.

I was in search for a netbook sold in the US that allows me to type Chinese. And all the answers I got, after calling Bestbuy, Geek Squad, and even manufacturers is that they all comes with an English OS, and if I want to see Chinese interface, I need to buy Windows 7 premium (another $200). I was very disappointed and gave up that idea.

After I bought this netbook, I found out exactly what I was told: the OS is in English, and I can’t type Chinese there. One big surprise is that it comes with the Express Gate, which is independent (I think) of the main Windows OS. And in there, I can choose Chinese interface, and then it allows me to type Chinese! Now I have to say the functions and applications are limited, but for someone who is desperate about typing Chinese in the US, this is a big plus!

Of course, other things works really well too. But really recommend to upgrade the RAM to 2GB.

This little thing is awesome. I speculated getting a netbook for a long time and after putting ubuntu 10.10 on it , it runs great. Tried to play “crush the castle” and the graphics can’t keep up but looks like the 1015pn has the ion2. For $368 its great but if you want some better graphics get the pn. The battery is great and the computer is solid. Awesome!

Memory speed is 1333MHz NOT 1066! So order the correct speed and upgrade to 2Gb.

Cons: DOES NOT HAVE USB 3.0. I called ASUS b4 purchase and they said that model PU17 had USB 3.0 —- WRONG

    Pros: Everything else

    22 October Update:

Prior to purchasing I called ASUS support department (11 Oct) and wanted to know exactly what model of the Eepc 1015PEM I needed to purchase in order to get the 1-USB 2.0 and 2-USB 3.0 ports.

I was told I needed the 1015PEM-PU17. So with that information I ordered exactly that from Amazon.com on the 11th of October. When my netbook arrived late on the 15th of October I found it had 3-USB 2.0 ports and NO USB 3.0 ports. I called ASUS tech support on the 18th of October, spoke to ***** after 15 minutes on hold, he took my information and told me he could not locate a Supervisor, but he would have one call me before the end of the week. Well today is Friday, the end of the week and no call, so I called tech support. 22 October at 2pm CST – could not find a supervisor, told me to call back in an hour. I called back at 3:22pm and after waiting 11 minutes to locate a supervisor the phone started ringing, I let it ring two minutes and no one answered.

Needless to say I am NOT happy with ASUS at this moment, and because of this lack of support I dropped my rating to one star. Amazon is understandably unwilling to help, I got what I ordered.

The features and discription are everything they say. I came from a 15.4 full lap top, so the sleekish smaller design took a little getting use to, but I love it. It’s small, flashy, loads up fast, and is quiet, and with fast load up. I get about 11.5 hours of battery life, but like the old saying goes, the more you drain it, the stronger you will make it. the mouse is a little sinceative, but I know how to adjust that. The LED screen is absolutley wonderful! Very easy on the eyes. I have used a lot of lap tops in the last 4 years, and this by far is the best one. Before on average I was lucky to get 3, maybe 4 hours of battery life. With this little guy, I’m doubling that. I liked it so much I bought one for my wife, and she can’t believe the ease of use. I’d recommend this for any one who just wants to email, surf the net, and play around with videos. The office sweet lags a little, but it will be fine once I add my 2 gigs of ram. 2 thumbs up all the way
