adware stands for advertising spyware. it slows down your internet by giving you tons of popups. you should have an antivirus program and antispyware program installed on you pc to avoid having problems with adware, spyware, malware, viruses, and spam.
its a fine line between adware and spyware, normally adware is a pest with popups. and yes, can affect speed and some like to call home if allowed. tracking cookies will clog up things too.
